Beyond Birth: A Doula & Client Story

I'm not sure where to begin when talking about this incredible family—they hold such a special place in my heart.

Mother holding newborn baby

Last year, I had the privilege of offering doula support for this remarkable family during the journey of their first baby. As we all know, birth is unpredictable, and this family faced some significant unforeseen obstacles along the way. Despite the challenges, they approached them head-on, ready to overcome anything for their precious boy.

Lindsey, the mother, is one of the funniest, sweetest, and most caring individuals I've ever met. We instantly connected, and our organic bond was evident during every interaction. Our prenatal meetings felt like time spent with an old friend, filled with laughter and smiles that would last until our faces hurt.

Then there's Marco, Lindsey's husband. His love for his family is truly awe-inspiring. He goes to great lengths for them, and it's clear that they are his entire world. Witnessing partners show up for their significant others the way Marco does for Lindsey and their precious son is just beautiful.

Lindsey's birthing experience didn't follow the expected narrative often depicted in movies. Things changed paths and she and Marco fought through a very emergent scenario (a few times) to meet their sweet baby. Due to the circumstances, their little warrior did need to stay in the NICU for a bit before heading home. I personally have experienced what it is like to be a NICU parent and it can feel like your entire world stops. I wanted to do anything I could to support them in this hard time.

Another twist in their story was poor Lindsey had contracted COVID prior to delivery. So, after being rushed into surgery due to placenta previa abruption, she wasn't able to hold her baby once he was born.

With the birth so emergent, I was not able to make it to the hospital in time, so in turn, I never was exposed to Lindsey in those few days leading up to birth or during birth. Due to this, I was able to be their representative for baby Marcel. I can't tell you the honor it was to be invited and trusted as a "step-in" for his parents as they counted down the days until they were able to hold him. I always looked forward to seeing Marcel in those few days and hearing his progress.... his cute little toes were a perk too. We would video chat each visit from the NICU to their hospital room so Marco and Lindsey could talk to their little warrior, get updates from nurses, hear his sweet sounds, and just be with their baby.

The day I got the text "We get to bring him home!" from Lindsey I couldn't stop the tears that instantly filled my eyes with joy. After this long journey, they all get to go home together, as a family of three.

Expressing what it was like to be their doula along for this chapter and now forever friend is beyond words. Baby Marcel, Lindsey, and Marco will forever have a special place in my heart.

To all the families who have allowed me to accompany them on their journeys, both past and present, and those in the future—thank you. I deeply understand the weight of this role as a doula, and I am honored to provide the genuine love, support, and advocacy every birthing person deserves.
