Navigating Insurance-Covered Breast Pumps: What Every New Mom Should Know

Welcoming a new life into the world is a joyous occasion, but it also comes with its fair share of responsibilities. Thankfully, the Affordable Care Act (ACA) recognizes the importance of supporting new mothers in their breastfeeding journey. One key provision ensures that insurance-covered breast pumps and supplies are accessible to eligible moms at no cost.

Understanding Your Options:

Under the ACA, insurance companies are mandated to provide coverage for breast pumps and supplies for pregnant members or those who have recently given birth and are breastfeeding. The range of options available may vary from one insurance provider to another. Some companies offer choices that could include, double-electric, single-electric, battery-operated, and manual models, while others may have a more limited selection.

Two very reputable and widely covered brands are Spectra and Medela, making them popular choices among new moms seeking quality breast pumps through their insurance plans.

Exceptions to the Rule:

However, not all insurance plans automatically cover breast pumps. If you find yourself in a situation where your insurance company claims you aren't entitled to a free breast pump, the likely reason is that your plan falls under the category of "grandfathered" plans. These are plans that were in existence before March 2010 and haven't undergone significant changes since then. Grandfathered plans are not obligated to comply with certain ACA provisions, including the coverage of preventive services like free breast pumps.

Appealing a Denial:

If you believe your plan should cover a breast pump and you are denied, you have the right to appeal. The appeals process is typically outlined in your member handbook or on the insurance company's website. If you find yourself in need of assistance, don't hesitate to reach out to your state’s Department of Insurance or Consumer Assistance Program.

In navigating the realm of insurance-covered breast pumps, understanding your rights and available options is crucial. The ACA has significantly improved access to this essential tool for new moms, but being aware of potential exceptions and the appeals process can empower you to make informed decisions about your healthcare coverage.

By taking advantage of the benefits provided by the ACA, new mothers can get quality breast pumps that are insurance covered.
